Working Title Director of Major Gifts

Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Major Gifts (MG), the Director of Major Gifts will work within the Office of Institutional Advancement to secure significant philanthropic support for Emerson College. The Director will develop and implement strategies and manage relationships to qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gift prospects. The Director’s focus will be on securing philanthropic support from individuals to meet the short- and long-term goals of the College.

The Director will focus on developing long-term relationships built on a firm understanding of donors’ interests, passions and values. This individual will carry a portfolio of prospects with a giving capacity of $100,000 and above. Those prospects will include alumni, parents and friends of the College, including friends of WERS and ArtsEmerson. This position requires extensive travel with an annual visit goal of 120 face-to-face meetings. The Director must be able to work both on a team and individually to meet stretch goals, while being a strategic leader in helping to build a culture of philanthropy at Emerson.

Primary Duties, Responsibilites, and Tasks
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Education (including hardware, software, and equipment)

•Must be a professional with a record of building donor relationships and closing six-figure gifts.
•Must be a self-starter with helpful personality and excellent interpersonal skills.
•Strong writing, oral and presentation communication skills.
•Detail oriented with strong organizational and computer skills.
•Knowledge of Microsoft Word and familiarity with databases.
•Understanding and compliance with donor confidentiality requirements.
•Bachelor’s degree.

Preferred/Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Education (including hardware, software, and equipment)

•Facility with both MAC and PC computer platforms.
•Familiarity with Excel and PowerPoint.
•Graduate degree

Required Prior Work Experience

•Seven-to-10 years of nonprofit, direct solicitation/front-line fundraising experience.

Job Duties

Individual Work Activities

Act as primary relationship manager for individuals with a capacity of $100,000 or more, maintaining a portfolio of 100 to 200 active prospects.

Strive to conduct 120 face-to-face prospect visits annually both within New England and outside of the region as assigned.

Cultivate and expand opportunities for prospects by integrating planned giving objectives into major gift strategy (in collaboration with the Director of Gift Planning).
